Darius B. Gibbs couldn’t return to the Philippines, to be with his son and family, when Typhoon Haiyan hit. His life is here. He lives in Dumont, New Jersey with his mother and works as a fashion designer in his own studio nearby. But Gibbs cannot ignore what has happened to his homeland either. He, his friends and colleagues all have friends and family living without basic necessities. They feel a real obligation to do everything possible to help. So on a cold December night in Woodside, Queens, Gibbs brought the Filipino diaspora together at Payag Restaurant to raise funds for relief efforts and to celebrate everything he loves about his first home.
